Safety Tips for Walking Your Dog at Night

Many dog owners walk their canine companions after dark. This can be for many reasons: you’re gone at work for most of the day, for example, or Fido insists on one final walk before bed. But walking at night isn’t as safe as walking during the day. It’s important to keep that in mind.

If at all possible, choose to walk on roads that have sidewalks, or at least a wide shoulder. Walking on narrow streets is never advisable. Always use a leash, even if your dog is very well-trained; you want to have that measure of control over your pet at all times. It’s also a good idea to have your dog wear reflective items, like a leash, collar, or vest with reflective strips sewn in. You can also don clothing with reflective material, like shoes, a hat, or a jacket, to make yourself more visible.
