What to Do if My Horse is Charging the Gate

Horses should not be charging the get when it’s time to go in or when they want in. Charging the gate is not only dangerous to the owner, but it’s also dangerous to the horse. Ideally, your horse should approach the gate slowly and stand and wait for you to open the gate and attach his lead rope. Once you open the gate, you should be able to lead your horse out. He should not push his way through. A suggested way to make sure you horse uses good manners at the gate is to go through the process repeatedly. If your horse doesn’t approach or enter the gate as he should then do it again. Repeat the process until he does it right. When he does it right, give him a treat, and continue to the barn or to the field. For more tips for training your horse contact your experienced vet Helotes TX.
