Commercial Cat Food Brands

Cats are first and foremost carnivores therefore they will not thrive well on a vegetarian diet. They have special nutritional needs that should be taken into consideration to stay healthy and have a long and happy life. A cat’s diet should be composed primarily of animal protein. There is one form of amino acid which is needed by cats but is not synthesized in their bodies. Taurine is an essential amino acid which can be manufactured by dogs and humans while cats are unable to perform this metabolic function. Thus they need to obtain this important amino acid from their diet. A lack of Taurine in their diet has been associated with important health problems including blindness and serious heart problems. Cats are unable to convert Beta carotene (a Vitamin A precursor) to Vitamin A. In the wild, this incapacity is often supplied by preformed Vitamin A which is already present in the meat of their prey. Cats are also unable to make Vitamin D in their bodies. Unlike people who can manufacture the vitamin through the skin, cats need to obtain Vitamin D from their diet.

Your pet’s diet should be an important topic that you should discuss with your Glendale, AZ veterinarian during your pet’s wellness checks. Learn more here.
