Dogs and Mosquitoes
Mosquitoes are a popular nuisance during the spring and summer months and even into the early fall. If you have a canine companion then you should talk to your vet about starting your dog on a heartworm prevention medication. Heartworms are primarily transmitted through mosquitoes. If your dog is bitten by a mosquito you want to make sure he’s protected. Mosquitoes can carry other diseases as well including the the West Nile Virus, Eastern equine encephalitis and systemic lupus erythematosus. If you live in an area that is close to water chances are your mosquito population will be high. It’s important not to have standing water in your yard as well in order to reduce the number of mosquitoes. Ask your pet clinic Lexington, KY about a dog safe mosquito spray that can be used in your yard.
