Treatment Options For Hyperthyroidism In Cats

There are several options to treat hyperthyroidism in cats. These include medication, surgery, dietary management, and radioactive iodine therapy.

  • Medication — The most common medication for hyperthyroidism in cats is methimazole. It works by reducing thyroid hormone production and release, but it does not have an effect of the continuously-growing tumor. While it’s readily available and inexpensive, there may be a need to increase the dosage over time to produce the same effects.
  • Dietary management - Affected cats are placed on a prescription diet that contains less iodine.
  • Surgery — Thyroidectomy involves the surgical removal of the affected thyroid glands. This treatment option is often used when medication and radio-iodine therapy are not viable options.
  • Radioactive iodine therapy — Experts often consider this as the best treatment option for hyperthyroidism in cats. The radioactive iodine works by destroying the tumor in the gland without causing any damage to the adjacent tissues.
