Can Dogs Have Hiccups?

Hiccups naturally occur in humans, they can get pretty annoying. Scientifically, it’s described as the sudden involuntary contraction of the muscles in the diaphragm. Will our dogs get the hiccups as well?

Absolutely yes! But just like in humans, this is nothing to worry about. In fact, hiccups have been known to aid in expelling gasses in your dog’s tummy. Hiccups will usually occur more in puppies than in adult dogs.

Your pooch’s hiccups are usually caused by eating too fast. A trick around this is to place large rocks or big stones in his food. Make sure that these are big enough that your dog doesn’t swallow them. This way he’ll have no choice but to work around the rocks or stones to get to the food. This should slow down his eating.

Be careful though, hiccups can also be signs that your dog is under a lot of stress, fatigue or anxiety. You can consult with your veterinarian Cincinnati, OH if your dog is experiencing too many hiccups. Read more here.
