Training Your Dog to Sit on Command
If your dog will sit on command, you have a tool to get him under control quickly. And many other obedience commands start from a sitting position so this is a good first step in training. Train your dog when he is alert but not too excited. Get down to your dog’s level. Hold a food treat in front of his nose to get his attention. Raise the treat up and over your dog’s head so he needs to lower his rear end to continue following it. Say your dog’s name followed by the SIT command. As soon as his rear end touches the floor, give your dog the treat and lots of praise. Practice this often while you increase the time between the touchdown and giving him the treat. Gradually reduce and then eliminate the treats so your dog sits because of your command and praise alone. Contact your vets Temecula, CA to learn more.
