Idiopathic Feline Lower Urinary Tract Disease (IFLUTD)

Cats are prone to suffering a disease condition affecting the lower urinary tract. It is composed of a variety of symptoms which are generally termed Idiopathic Feline Lower Urinary Tract Disease (IFLUTD).  The condition is also known in medical terms as Feline Idiopathic Cystitis (FIC), Feline Urologic Syndrome (FUS), or Interstitial Cystitis.

IFLUTD is characterized by health problems that involve the presence of blood in urine, frequent urination, difficult or painful passage of urine, failure to control the urinary bladder thus urinating in undesignated places, and blockage of the urethra which may be partial or complete.

This health problem in cats mainly occurs from the urinary bladder down to the urethra, a tube which leads to the external part of the body by which the urine is eliminated. Diagnosis of IFLUTD is often reached only when other health problems that manifest the same symptoms have been eliminated. The presence of kidney stones and/or urinary tract infection needs to be eliminated first before your Rochester, NY vet can reach a definitive diagnosis of IFLUTD. Set an appointment at this link:
