Why your cat gets hairballs

Your cat is an excellent companion and you want to make sure you are able to help her lead a wonderful life. In order to do this, you will need to understand her to the best of your ability. This makes you wonder – why does she get so many hairballs?

Your cat needs to be well-groomed in order to feel comfortable and this means that she will likely spend a great deal of time tending to her coat. Since she grooms herself by licking her fur, she is picking up dirt, debris, and shed fur and ingesting it. This tends to accumulate in her system and forms hairballs. The more she removes from her coat, the more hairballs she is likely to have. You can help to minimize this by brushing her and removing shed fur from her body before she licks it out of her coat.
