Why Cats Need A High-Protein Diet

Have you ever wondered why cats need a high-protein diet? Being obligate or true carnivores means cats thrive with a meat-based protein source for good health. A diet that is deficient in protein can pave the way for a range of serious health problems.

Proteins are composed of building blocks called ‘amino acids’, which are important in various physiological processes in the body. Protein is essential for body building and repair, formation of enzymes, neurotransmitters, and hormones. Protein is also essential in immune system integrity and function.

There are 20 amino acids that are normally required by cats for normal functioning of the body. Eleven of the amino acids are considered to be “essential”, which mean scats are unable to synthesize them in the body thus they must obtain these essential amino acids from their diet.
