Early Treatment for Dogs with DM

DM stands for Degenerative Myelopathy. It is an incurable disease that affects the nerves and spinal cord causing loss of mobility in the legs as well as numbness or loss of sensation and feeling in the legs. There is no cure, but there are treatment options to help slow the progression of the disease. Some studies show that early treatment for dogs that may be prone to DM can help ward off the disease much longer than dogs that have no early treatment. Although this has not been proven 100%, some owners have started their DM prone dogs (i.e. German Shepherds) on specific exercise schedules, diet, medication and other supportive means at an early age to help prolong mobility for their dog in his later years (whether he develops DM or not). You should first talk to your veterinary clinic Gresham, OR about your dog’s chances of developing DM before implementing any type of program.
