Why Do Dogs Cough?

Coughing in dogs can be caused by various reasons from a protective reflex to get rid of an irritant in the air passages to kennel cough to bacterial and viral infections to cancer.

Coughing can be triggered when a dog keeps on pulling on his lead and the collar exerts pressure on the windpipe or trachea. Replacing the collar with a harness or letting the dog undergo some lead training can help address the problem.

A dog that is excited or anxious can also experience coughing fits. This is especially true in dogs with tracheal collapse, a condition that is commonly observed in small canine breeds.

Another potential cause of coughing bouts in dogs is kennel cough, a highly contagious medical issue. Most dogs usually recover within 2-3 weeks. The cough has a characteristic sound like that of a honking goose.

Frequent and/or severe bouts of coughing in dogs should be brought to the attention of a best veterinarian Tampa, FL
