Can Birds Choke?

Choking is rare but possible in birds. Sometimes they can eat too quickly or swallow to fast and start to choke. Baby birds have been known to aspirate on formula or water. Call your vet right away if this happens. Let your vet know exactly what your bird was doing when he started coughing and what he was eating. If your bird wasn’t eating or drinking make sure you tell your vet that as well. The cough could be something else instead of a choke. Your vet may also be able to walk you through a few procedures over the phone to help your bird. For instance, you may be told to hold the bird upside down without restraining the head. You may also be told to do a quick compression to the keel or breastbone while the bird is inverted. Never do this without your  reputed vet Greater Cincinnati telling you how.
