Treating Bloat in Canines

Talk to your vet extensively about what bloat is in canines, what to look for and how to treat it. It’s important to have your canine receive treatment right away as bloat can often be fatal. Bloat often occurs when large amounts of air or fluid forms in the stomach causing the stomach to swell. The swelling often blocks the veins from sending blood to vital organs causing low blood pressure, shock or organ damage. Immediate treatment may involve the vet placing a tube into the dog’s mouth and down to the stomach to release built up pressure in the stomach area. Stomachs that are twisted require a large hallow needle to be placed in to the stomach to relieve pressure. From here, surgery is needed to untwist the stomach.
