Choosing Your Cat’s Water Bowl

Your cat needs fresh, clean water to prevent dehydration, kidney problems or other internal issues. She may find that a plastic bowl smells odd and reject it. Ceramic bowls are heavy and won’t tip over easily so they make a good choice. Your cat may feel threatened while drinking from a deep bowl since it may compromise her peripheral vision. Experiment with different bowls to see if your cat prefers a light or a dark colored bowl. Carefully consider where you put the water bowl. Most cats are comfortable with the water bowl near the food bowl but this may make your cat unhappy. Don’t put the water bowl near the litter box. Put your cat’s water bowl out of the main traffic areas of your home or she may avoid it. Test locations to ensure that your cat drinks enough water. Keep the water bowl clean.
