Chinchillas and Ticks

Did you know that chinchillas can get ticks just like cats and dogs? Although your chinchilla may not go outside, he can still pick up ticks from other animals in the home or even from people. If ticks make their way into the home via a dog, cat, or person they can fall off the original host and find their way to the chinchilla. It’s important to treat all animals in the home with a flea and tick preventative medication to ensure there are no fleas and ticks and if there are that they do not spread. People can do self checks to ensure they aren’t bringing ticks into the home as well. For instance, if you’ve been outside in the woods or tall grass do a tick check before going indoors. Flea and tick prevention meds may be available for chinchillas. Talk with your vet Burlington, ON for more information.
