How to Care for a Nursing Pup

When caring for puppies it’s important to remember to also provide extra care for the nursing mother. Weaning not only effects the puppies, but it also affects the mom. Before weaning you should be feeding your mother pup a vet recommended portion of high calorie, high quality dog food. This will give the mom the strength and nutrients she needs to nurse. In the weaning phase you will start to cut back the puppies’ access to their mother’s milk. At this time you will also want to start tapering your mother dog off of her large serving of food and get her back to her normal (pre-pregnant) dog food amount. This will help stop the milk production as well. Weaning should take place around three to four weeks of age and conclude around seven or eight weeks. Talk to your New Orleans, LA vet to learn more.
