Health Issues Affecting Hedgehogs

Even with proper nutrition and appropriate living conditions, there is still a possibility for hedgehogs to develop health issues and illness. Some common medical problems that affect hedgehogs include:

Gas formation tend to occur when hedgehogs eat certain types of veggies such as cabbage and its related kind. The gas accumulation occurs in the hedgehog’s bowels which makes them appear to swell up. While some cases resolve on their own, some will need veterinary intervention.

Respiratory problems

An enclosure that is not cleaned regularly can have high levels of ammonia which can damage the lungs of hedgehogs and cause pneumonia.

Obstructions in the gastrointestinal tract

There are instances when a hedgehog eats things that can get stuck in their gut. These are usually non-edible objects like cat litter.

Wobbly Hedgehog Syndrome

There is degeneration of the nervous system and affected hedgehogs lose their sense of balance. The problem is thought to be hereditary and affects about 10% of hedgehogs that are kept as pets. Unfortunately, there is no cure for the problem.

Sudden changes in your pet’s health and/or behavior should be checked out by a pet clinic Cherry Hill, NJ sooner rather than later.
