Hypothyroidism In Dogs

Dogs with hypothyroidism appears to put on weight even when their daily food intake has been reduced. Dieting and exercising don’t seem to help either. Affected dogs also seem to be lazy and uninterested with activities that they once love to engage in.

Many dogs have hypothyroidism. It is characterized by an abnormally low production of the thyroid hormone by the thyroid glands. The main function of the thyroid hormone is control the metabolism of the body. An increase in the production of thyroid hormone can lead to increased storage of carbohydrates, proteins, and fats in the body cells.

Many cases of hypothyroidism in dogs are acquired later in life. However, there are cases when puppies are born with the condition (congenital). There are various causes of acquired hypothyroidism.

  • Thyroiditis (inflammation of the thyroid gland) can cause damage to the thyroids glands leading to decreased thyroid hormone production.
  • Dysfunction of the pituitary gland
  • Thyroid cancer
  • Idiopathic hypothyroidism in which the underlying cause is not known
  • Increased levels of steroid in the blood

Sudden changes in your pet’s health and/or behavior should warrant an appointment with your veterinarian Carolina Forest, SC .
