Training Your Dog to Sit on Command

Training your dog to sit on command helps you get him under control quickly if you need to. And more advanced obedience commands start from a sitting position so this is a good first training session. Get down to your dog’s level and hold a food treat in front of his nose to get his attention. Raise the treat up and over your dog’s head high enough that he needs to lower his rear end to continue following it. Say your dog’s name and the SIT command. At the very moment his rear end touches the floor, praise him and give him the treat. As you practice this, increase the time before giving him the treat so he is actually sitting. Gradually reduce and then eliminate the treats so your dog obeys you by your command and praise alone. Learn more from your North Redington Beach, FL veterinary clinic.
