Can Your Dog Swim?

Did you know that not all dogs can swim? Indeed, not all dogs are natural-born swimmers. While some can stay afloat and enjoy swimming, some dogs are unable to do so. Canine breeds that are known to be good swimmers tend are medium to large-sized breeds with webbed feet and hair coats that are water-resistant. The most popular of these breeds are Labrador retrievers and golden retrievers. Other breeds of dogs that are natural swimmers include Newfoundlands, Portuguese water dog, American water spaniel, and Schipperke, to name a few. On the other hand, dogs that are poor swimmers are those with a large chest and small legs such as the pug, bulldog, and bull mastiff. Dachshunds, your quintessential sausage dogs, also have trouble staying afloat in water. While there are small dogs that are actually good swimmers, they can easily get cold while in the water and suffer from hypothermia.
