Pica In Pets

Pica is quite a common psychological disorder in dogs and cats. The condition is characterized by a compulsive habit of eating things other than food. Pets with the condition may find anything tasty even plastic, stones, wool, wood, and even their own poop! While some items are not harmful to pets, some can cause serious blockages of any part of the gastrointestinal tract that can possibly be life-threatening and may warrant expensive surgery to remove. In addition to the physical danger that pica poses to pets, the behavior may be bothersome to owners especially when their pet eats their own feces (a condition called coprophagy). There is also the possibility of damage to property as affected pets may chew the carpet, furniture, or even clothing.

If you suspect that your pet’s behavior may be attributed to pica, you should seek professional help by setting an appointment with your pet clinic North Phoenix, AZ. To learn more, click here.
