Taking Senior Dogs on Walks

Before starting your senior canine’s walking routine, talk to your vet to make sure your dog is healthy enough to start walking. Start out with just five-minute walks in the yard. Don’t rush your pup; instead, just let him walk around at his own pace. Give him time to adjust to being out for a walk. This will give you an idea of your senior dog’s pace. After doing this a couple of times a day (in addition to potty beaks), start asking your pup to walk. Walk up and down the drive way or a short distance in the yard or neighborhood. Don’t walk more than 10 minutes. If it’s hot out keep your walks at 5 minutes and try to walk in the early morning and late evening when it’s cooler. Slowly add time to the walks, but don’t go over 20 minutes unless your vets San Antonio, TX recommends it.
