What to Look for in a Hamster

Are you thinking of purchasing or adopting a hamster? These little furry pocket pets often have short lifespans of 1 to 3 years. They are recommended for first time pet owners as well as children (with adult supervision). Before purchasing, make sure you check local pet stores adoption centers, rescues, and shelters in case they have a hamster up for adoption. Talk with your vet to find out what you should look for when buying a hamster. For instance, make sure the hamster is currently living in a clean environment. If he’s in a dirty cage, he may not have been cared for very well and could have health issues. Check the hamster’s eyes and nose. They should be clear. Make sure the hamster can move with no limping. Ensure his feet have no sores and his nails are trimmed. Ask your Thorold, ON vet for help in making a decision on which hamster to bring home.
