Should You Approach a Stray Cat?

As a general rule of thumb you should not approach a stray cat on your own. The cat could be injured, sick, or even scared and could possibly act out aggressively in an unknown or unfamiliar situation. If you see a cat hanging around your area and you know it doesn’t belong to your neighbors, report the cat to the local animal authorities. If possible, take a picture of the cat and post it on social media. Someone may have reported the cat lost and even recognize the photo. You can try to offer the cat a bowl of water and/or cat food, but don’t approach him or force him to eat or drink. Allow him to do so on his own. This could help encourage him to stay in the area until authorities can come and attempt to trap and ID him. Talk to your Mt. Airy, MD vet for more tips.
