The Rough and Soft Side of the American Wirehair

The American Wirehair breed is a unique breed that shares a lot of similarities with the rat terrier canine family. The American Wirehair received its name from its wire like hair type on his coat. This wirery coat gives him a coarse or tough feel when initially pet. However, if you can adjust to the odd feeling coat then you may be surprised to discover that this breed is quite affectionate, soft hearted and loving. The breed has been described as affectionate, loyal, and lover of all people of all ages. They are great family cats because they like to be the center of attention and their rough coat doesn’t need as much attention so grooming is pretty basic if nonexistent. The breed was recognized as the first naturally occurring mutation to receive acceptance into the Cat Fanciers’ Association as a purebred.
