Cold Weather and Gerbils

When the weather starts to turn cold, keep an extra eye on your gerbil to make sure he is staying nice and warm in his habitat. If your home is heated to a nice temperature of around 70 degrees F your gerbil will most likely be just fine. Just make sure your gerbil’s cage isn’t near any windows as a cold draft could come through. Also make sure your gerbil’s cage is not near a vent because you don’t want him to get too much heated air. In the cage itself, add plenty of bedding so your gerbil can burrow around and stay nice and warm. Feed your gerbil his normal diet. If he doesn’t drink his water at room temperature try warming it a bit and see if that makes a difference. For more tips, give your Orangevale, CA vet a call.
