Your Cat’s Whiskers
Your cat’s whiskers are thick, specialized hairs that are connected to sensitive nerves. Her whiskers provide her with extra sensory perception. The whiskers will grow to roughly the width of your cat’s body. Thus she can use them to determine whether she will fit in narrow spaces. If her head and whiskers fit through the opening, the rest of her body will too. Your cat can use her whiskers to calculate height and distance so she can jump from surface to surface with safety. And she can pick up subtle vibrations with her whiskers so she can determine the exact location of prey even in the dark. This prey could be a mouse or even your foot. Never trim your cat’s whiskers or she could become disoriented and confused. Old worn whiskers will fall out and be replaced with new ones as needed. Contact your Roanoke, VA vet to learn more.
