What is Banamine for Horses?

If you own a horse or horses then you may have heard your vet mention Banamine or even prescribe it for your horse. But what is it? Banamine is known in the medical field as Flunixin Meglumine. It is a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID). Most veterinarians will prescribe this drug to combat pain or even fever in horses. Some have referred to Banamine as a muscle relaxer, however, this is not the case. It can help relieve inflammation and even reduce pain but should not be given on a regular basis as a muscle relaxer specific medication. Banamine comes in the form of liquid injectible formula or a paste. It should not be administered without the approval of a veterinarian. Most vets will recommend that you keep Banamine on hand only to administer when instructed. For more information about this medication and how to use it and when, consult with your Marietta, GA vet.
