Pet Allergies: Recognizing Symptoms and Treatment Regimen

An allergy is a hypersensitivity reaction exhibited by cats and dogs  in response to the presence of an allergen which can be food-borne or  present in their environment. Pets that often suffer from allergies  possess oversensitive immune systems that immediately react to  allergens. In order to get rid of any allergen, hypersensitive dogs and  cats manifest distinct signs which can immediately be detected by their  owners. Allergies in cats and dogs have been recognized as one of the  leading causes of skin problems. Allergens abound everywhere and more  often than not, it is quite difficult to establish the root of the  problem. Some of the most common causes of allergies in pets include:

  • Food
  • Plastic
  • Grass, weeds, and trees
  • Fabrics
  • External parasites including fleas, ticks,
  • Dust
  • Smoke from cigarette and other emissions
  • Perfumes and other strong odors
  • Insect bites including bee stings
  • Mold and mildew
  • Rubber
  • Medications such as specific antibiotics and anesthetics
  • Pollen

Food-borne  allergies are often triggered by an ingredient such as chicken, corn,  fish, milk, eggs and wheat which are present in your pet’s food.

You should work closely with your vet Washington DC in establishing the potential allergen that is causing your pet’s problem so it can be addressed appropriately.
