African Pygmy Hedgehog
Among the several types of hedgehogs that are kept as pets, the most popular is the African Pygmy hedgehog. Being nocturnal, they spend most of the day sleeping and become more active towards dusk and at night time. If you have several hedgehogs, you may be bothered by the noise that they make at night as they interact with each other. When it comes to their diet, hedgehogs thrive on having both meat and plants in their diet. Although they may be cute, these creatures are surely NOT cuddly. They won’t make lap pets. So if you want a pet that’s cuddly, steer clear of hedgehogs. Spines cover most of their body except their belly. Although the spines are not barbed compared to those of a porcupine’s quills, they can still get stuck in your hand and can be quite painful. When a hedgehog perceives a potential threat, it rolls into a ball to protect its vulnerable underside and face while exposing its spines.
