Should My Horses Stay Out All Night in the Winter?
Leaving your horses out day and night during the colder and harsher winter months will be up to you and the type of weather you are having. If you’re not sure, just ask your vet and fellow horse owners what they are doing. If there is a winter storm approaching, it may be a good idea to blanket your horses and bring them either into a barn and stall them or at least bring them to a pasture area close to your barn or house so you can easily check on them during the duration of the storm. For average, cold and typical snowy days leaving your horses out is fine especially if that’s what they’re used to. If the temps drop and stay below freezing for long periods of time you may want to blanket them. For more suggestions give your Mt. Airy, MD vet a call.
