Keeping Your Cat Off Your Kitchen Counters

Your cat may like hanging out on your kitchen counters because she gets food when she is up there. She may also like to peruse her territory from a high vantage point. However, this can be annoying and unsanitary when you prepare food. Feed her while she is on the counter. If she jumps up there, remove her gently and move her to a safe place. Don’t punish, yell at her or push her roughly off the counter. Cover your counters with aluminum foil strips or double-sided tape while not in use. These materials feel weird to your cat’s feet and she will avoid the counters. Your cat will soon learn that she is not allowed on the counters. Give your cat an alternate perch such as a windowsill or shelf so she can observe the hubbub of your home from a safe place. Learn more from your Forest Hill, MD veterinary clinic.
