Can Dogs Eat Macadamia?

Macadamia can be toxic to dogs. Signs of poisoning are usually evident within a few hours after consuming the nuts. In some dogs, toxic signs may be manifested much sooner. There may be vomiting, increase in body temperature (hyperthermia), lethargy, elevated heart rate, and unsteady gait. The nuts usually abound during celebrations, making it easy for dogs to have access to them. The symptoms, however, could be much worse if the dog consumes chocolate-covered macadamias because the animal’s body will now be dealing with several toxins.

Vomiting can be induced if you think your dog has consumed macadamia within the last hour. However, it is recommended that you ask your vet clinic Kilgore, TX immediately so the staff can instruct you on what to do. You may give activated charcoal because it can help lessen the absorption of the toxin from the gastrointestinal tract.
