Training Your Dog to Stay on Command

Once you get your dog in a sitting or lying down position, you need him to stay there and that’s where training your dog to stay on command helps. Before training, ensure your dog knows his own name and obeys the SIT command consistently. While your dog is sitting, hold a treat in front of his nose. Say the STAY command and continue holding the treat there for a few seconds. Hold your hand up in front of your dog’s face to reinforce the command. Practice this often and increase the time your dog stays before giving him the treat and praise. Step away from your dog a bit at a time to create distance and build consistency. If your dog breaks toward you, don’t give him the treat. Quickly move your dog back into position. Be patient and ever yell or punish your dog while he is learning.
