Pet Wellness Visits - How To Lessen The Stress

Visits to the vet are occasions that many pets and their owners don’t look forward to. Fortunately, there are ways to lessen the stress and anxiety. Be sure that you have an appointment and approach the receptionist once you arrive. Keeping your pet in a carrier until it’s his turn will keep him safe and comfortable. You can cover the carrier with a towel or a light cloth. If your dog is on a leash, shorten the leash so he can’t wander far from you. A short leash will also make it easier for you to control your pet’s movements. Keep a comfortable distance from other pets; choose a spot that is quiet and comfortable.

While being examined by the vet, speak quietly and calmly to your pet. If he behaves, give him a bite-sized treat. You can ask your vet if you can stay with your dog during examination; however, there are pets that become stressed and anxious when their owners are accompanying them inside the examination room. Some Lafayette, LA vet clinics address the problem by doing a physical exam or procedure in a room with only the staff in attendance.
