Change In Skin Color May Indicate A Health Problem In Cats

A sudden change in the color of a cat’s skin should not be taken for granted. Cat parents should have it checked out by a veterinarian. There are several important medical conditions in which skin color changes are an important symptom.

This is a hereditary problem which is characterized by the formation of white spots on the cat’s skin. The spots typically develop around the eyes and nose and tend to appear as the cat matures. Fortunately, they don’t give rise to any health problem. It is mostly a cosmetic problem.

Bilateral Periocular Leukotrichia

The problem affects Siamese cats and the main symptom is the lightening of the skin around the cat’s eyes. In most cases, the condition is stress-related. It has also been diagnosed in pregnant cats. BPL can also be a symptom of an underlying medical issue.

Immune-mediated conditions

Lupus erythematosus and other types of immune-mediated conditions can develop a change in skin color. This occurs when their own antibodies attack the different cells and tissues of the skin, causing damage and depigmentation.
