How long of a hike should you take with your small dog?
Small dogs may surprise you. They can handle quite a few big dog challenges. If you are going to take your dog on a long hike, make sure you and your small dog have built up to the distance and length of time you plan to be away. For instance, if you and your Pomeranian are both new to hikes pick a small hike or trail that you can make in about half a mile or 20 minutes. Do this a few times a week for a couple of weeks. Then, if your dog seems comfortable on the walk with no limping, tiring or overly panting, extend the hike to a mile walk which could take 30 to 40 minutes. If you are taking hikes that involve climbing or rugged terrain take this into account. The hike might be short mile wise, but it could take twice as long.
