Housing Requirements Of Pet Parakeets (Budgies)
Just like other types of birds that are kept as pets, parakeets thrive best in a spacious enclosure that has a perch or two and toys that are safe for birds. As a rule of thumb, the minimum cage dimension is 20″ long x 12″ deep x 18″ high. But ideally, the recommended size is 40″ long x 20″ deep x 32″ high. Horizontal bars on your pet’s cage provide lots of opportunities to climb and engage in natural behaviors.
Food and water containers should be attached to the sides of the cage, placing them away from the perches to prevent soiling the contents with their droppings.
Budgies also like to spend hours chewing and climbing. To meet these needs, place some freshly cut branches of maple, oak, and fruit trees inside the enclosure. They need to chew on something to keep their beak and nails well-trimmed. Climbing is also good exercise. Once the tree branches are dry, be sure to replace them with freshly-cut ones.
Also, don’t forget to check that the perches are not covered with sandpaper for this can cause irritation and infections affecting their feet.
