When to Give Treats To Your Pet

Treats are important in dog training to provide positive reinforcements to desired behavior. There are two types of reinforcement in which treats can be used—continuous reinforcement and intermittent reinforcement.

Continuous reinforcement

The type involves giving a treat for each time your dog displays the expected behavior.

Intermittent reinforcement

This is usually used once he has learned the behavior. It involves giving lavish praise for expected behavior but slowly reducing the number of times treat is given until you are only rewarding him once in a while. Decreasing the treats too quickly can baffle your pet. When giving treats, always remember that they also contain calories.

Continue to offer verbal reinforcement every time your pet performs the desired behavior, even without the treats. Always use a happy but positive voice when giving verbal praise.
