Why Being A Good Alpha Leader Is Important In Dog Training

Dogs instinctively look up to the pack leader for guidance and protection. As pets, dogs should learn to acknowledge their owners are the alpha leader. Without a dominant leader, pet dogs can become anxious as they try to assume the leadership of the pack, which for them entails a lot of responsibility.

There are many positive ways to show your dog that you are the leader of the pack. Unfortunately, there are pet owners who use negative methods to show their dominance over their pets, and it can surely ‘backfire’ down the road. Some pet owners force their dog to roll on their back and hold them down. This is called the ‘alpha roll’. However, being held down in this vulnerable position can cause the dog to become frightened and confused. In fact, there have been cases when dogs became aggressive and bit their owners.

Contact your veterinarian London, ON if you have any concerns about your pet’s behavior.
