What Can Cause Hepatic Lipidosis (Fatty Liver) in Birds

Fatty liver disease can occur in a variety of animals including birds. The disease is also known as Hepatic Lipidosis and should be taken seriously. Symptoms may include a loss of appetite, lethargy, and even depression or mood swings and behavior changes. Contact your vet if you notice this in your bird. Your bird may have fatty liver disease or another type of illness. Treatment from your vet is critical for recovery especially if it’s related to fatty liver. Additional symptoms of the disease may include a distended abdomen, difficulty breathing, diarrhea or constipation, and even poor feather help. Liver problems have also been known to affect the central nervous system causing seizures and muscle tremors. Birds that develop fatty liver usually do so because of poor nutrition, obesity, or genetic conditions.
