Protecting your Chickens from the Elements

If you are planning to keep chickens on your farm or in your backyard one of the first things you need to do is provide them with appropriate shelter from the elements. Look for a chicken coop that has an area that in enclosed and covered to keep out wind, rain and snow is suggested. This area does not have to be the entire coop. Most coops have an enclosed area or hen house for the chickens to nest, lay eggs and sleep in at night. The rest of the coop is caged in but open so the chickens can get sunlight and experience some weather elements. If you have baby chickens you may need to consider keeping them indoors in a cage completely out of the elements to ensure their health and safety. Consult with your veterinarian Marietta, GA to find out what’s best for your chickens.
