Getting Your Cat to Exercise

Schedule 20 to 30 minutes of exercise time daily to keep your cat healthy and give her enough mental stimulation. The best exercise for your cat is through play. Play also gives your cat time to socialize and bond with you while exercising too. Always use a toy when playing with your cat to avoid getting bitten or scratched. Choose toys that stimulate your cat’s hunting instincts. A ball, laser pointer or a fishing rod toy will entice your cat to chase, pounce and jump. Your cat might enjoy retrieving toys that you can toss over and over. She might like to use an empty bag or box as a lair. She can ambush passing prey even if it is a squeaky toy. Raise your cat’s resting perches so she will need to jump up to access them. This will add a little more exercise. For more information, contact your Des Moines, IA veterinarian.
