The Fine Art of Petting Your Cat

Petting your cat seems pretty straightforward. However, if you do it wrong, your cat may bite or scratch you. And the definition of “right” relies on your cat’s personal preferences. However, there are a few guidelines to help your find your way. Ensure your cat is aware of your presence. Speak softly to her and reach out with your hand so she can smell you. Follow your cat’s lead. If she rubs her head against you, feel free to pet her head and scratch her ears. Similarly, if your cat rubs her side against your legs, you can pet the other side. Your cat may enjoy getting her chin scratched or long strokes along the back and sides. Always pet your cat in the natural direction of the fur. The tail, legs, paws and belly are often off limits.
