The Don’ts Of Muzzling Your Dog
A muzzle can be beneficial to dogs in specific situations. However, it can also be a source of stress for dogs and may not be an ideal solution for certain issues. There are instances when dogs develop undesirable behaviors because they experience pain, discomfort, and even trauma while wearing a muzzle.
Here are some precautions to observe when using a muzzle for your dog:
● Muzzles should not be used to prevent your dog from barking. The animal may stop barking for a while but as he gets uncomfortable, he will start barking unless the muzzle is fitted too tightly. Training to address excessive barking provides a better solution in addressing the issue.
● Muzzles should never be used to punish a dog. This can give a negative association to the muzzle. The bad experience may cause the dog to become frightened and even traumatized. Also, a dog cannot associate the muzzle and his mistake, hence, there is no teaching there. This will only make your dog afraid if he sees a muzzle. And your bond with him will be surely affected since he will not be trusting you like he used to.
